About the New Leaders Council of Columbus

The New Leaders Council of Columbus is the newest of 43+ state and local affiliates of the New Leaders Council, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that recruits, trains, and promotes the next generation of progressive Millennials. We’re bringing top talent, fresh blood, new faces, and creative thinking to Central Ohio.

We annually identify a cohort of 20 passionate, entrepreneurial young Fellows from beyond traditional power structures, who work outside politics, and from diverse demographics, professions, and perspectives that are underrepresented in public affairs. Nationally, 53% of our Fellows are women, 57% are non-white, and 11% identify as LGBTQ. All are welcome who share our commitment to social justice, equal opportunity, and strong democracy. We impose no litmus test and do not align with any partisan group or ideological wing. The program is free.

About the Institute

The Institute is our six-month leadership development program, where Fellows develop skills for organizing, fundraising, public speaking, media, advocacy, and morebond with their cohort; and network with constituencies across the progressive movement. The program requires one full weekend a month and occasional other meet-ups.

Fellows also collaborate with an experienced mentor to make and execute on a "capstone": a plan to run for office, to become progressive allies in business and industry, to join community boards, to manage or volunteer on campaigns, to create start-ups and social entrepreneurship ventures, to lead nonprofits, to advocate for issues and causes, and to form networks of thought leaders. 700 of our 4,400+ alumni nationally have run or are planning to run for office, but we are not just a candidate bootcamp. There are many ways to make change.

The Institute will begin in January 2018 and run through June 2018. These are the tentative dates:

  • January 20-21, 2018
  • February 24-25, 2018
